Reiki is an energy‑healing practice developed in early 20th century Japan. A practitioner places hands lightly on or just above the recipient’s clothed body and channels a calming, intention‑based energy intended to support relaxation and self‑healing.

 Proposed mechanisms:

 Parasympathetic activation: sessions often produce deep relaxation, lowering heart rate and shifting physiology from sympathetic (fight/flight) toward parasympathetic (rest/digest), which can reduce stress hormones.

 Placebo/expectation and therapeutic context: focused attention, calming touch, and a caring therapeutic relationship can change perception of symptoms and improve wellbeing.

 Psychophysiological regulation: rhythmic, slow touch and quiet environment may reduce arousal, improve sleep, and reduce pain perception via central nervous system modulation.

 Commonly reported benefits (what clients most often experience):

 Deep relaxation and reduced anxiety/stress.

 Improved sleep quality and reduced insomnia.

 Evidence and limits:

 Research: small trials and systematic reviews report benefits for relaxation, anxiety, and quality of life measures, but studies vary in quality, sample size, and controls. Evidence for direct physiological healing effects is limited and not conclusive.

 Reiki is best considered a complementary therapy to support wellbeing, not a replacement for medical care.
